Reality tv....you love to hate it! But I also just love it sometimes, in a fascinated, distant kind of way. It's backwards how it can be even more fake than sitcoms or dramas, their fictional counterparts. These strange, unnatural situations, living with the same group of people with little outside contact, one-on-one confessionals with the closet camera, the stress, time constraints, assignments, swearing to secrecy. The weird dynamic of bonding with but competing against other participants makes it a hotbed for all kinds of interesting activity. Maybe what living in community (!) would be like if it was a competition and we'd have to say bye to someone every week until one was left. That would've been terrifying! But we had other challenges in the house that were very reality-tv-like, mice and extreme temperatures...
One of my favorite reality moments was when Cameron Mitchell took himself out of The Glee Project this last episode. He's so innocent in a good way. Like my friend Emilie said, it's really rare to find a guy who values a kiss that much - but we did speculate how he seemed okay moving his body in a sexy way haha! I guess everyone has their slightly different boundaries. I appreciated hearing Ryan Murphy say that Glee hasn't done as good of a job representing a more conservative, religious, faith-based viewpoint, which would be cool for kids to see. Although who knows what a Christian character on Glee would look like - at the least it would've been a good topic of discussion.
It did seem a little like Cameron was a rare object, a carefully wrapped package, and Ryan wanted what he couldn't have. You don't really see people on tv making those kinds of decisions, against acting "sexuality," especially with a big fat prize in sight. Especially young beautiful people who say they're nerdy but aren't really that nerdy. I like these somehow real moments that reality tv is able to force out, despite its artificial get-ups and elaborately constructed situations.
